Please make them full color, and just denote the area as being future tiles.
This is a problem on any computer with a bright screen, and especially on mobile, where the screen is small.
This will also more closely reflect how a game would play in real life.
But you find the right argument : "This will also more closely reflect how a game would play in real life.".
