Or maybe add a more visible icon somewhere to display that you are the guard

There actually is a place they can see their role, but it is not very obvious. Making it more obvious would be a good idea.

I don't think it is the best thing to add an extra useless turn for every player, just to make player understand their role.
Think to turn based game or tournaments who can easily be 6 or 12 hours longer just because of that. (even if everyone act at the same time like in Secret moon).

Instead... What can be done is changing the starting message: 'There is one guard between us.' by something else, which explain way more what is going on (like 'There is one guard between which must make the mission failed.' and another one 'You are a xxxxx.')

Maybe it could happen during the initial look phase? Something like "You are XXX" with the role icon flashing, then the game makes you choose which room you want to look at initially;
That way, no extra turn is involved for turn-based games.
